Celebrating Girls and Women in Science

Updated: Feb 15

Today, EQUALS celebrates science! To commemorate International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we’re highlighting some of our partners who bring the rigor and methods of science to the mission of bridging the gender digital divide.

Trustworthy and solid data and case studies are essential in the effort to close the gender gap in technology. Our research-focused partners aim for recognizing successful strategies that can be repeated by others, specific to the policies and economic realities in local regions.

Our founding partner UN University headed up the team effort that led to the first EQUALS Research Coalition report, published in 2019. The EQUALS Research Coalition, now helmed by Oslo Metropolitan University and Georgia Tech, supports the gathering and analysis of data that in turn provides the evidence to inform and shape meaningful projects. Research Coalition members--such as Research ICT Africa, Data2X, University of Pennsylvania, the LIRNEasia, and many more—are solidly based in scientific, social, policy and technological research of the highest caliber.

EQUALS partners don’t just support science here on Earth. Partners such as GSMA, ESOA, and ITU and Inmarsat ensure that the satellites and supportive policies that connect half the world to the internet, and they work tirelessly in our coalitions to close the connectivity gap that keeps half the world (mostly women) unable to get online.

Check out the ITU “UNconnected” podcast for an interview with the founder of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Princess Nisreen El-Hashemite

We believe that when girls are encouraged to pursue science and technology careers, then science and technology can bloom. That’s why we support the successful ITU global program #GirlsinICT, celebrating its 10th year of helping connect girls with digital technology everywhere in the world.

On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and every other day of the year, EQUALS partners leverage expertise in research, technology, data, sci-tech policy, and critical thinking to make real progress in making sure that everyone can be #EQUALSinTech.
